First, your bookkeeper is likely not working on your bookkeeping every day—they take weekends, vacations, and days off, too. But, even outside of time off, there’s a chance your bookkeeper isn’t working on your accounts every day, either.
But that’s not to say there are no busy seasons or times when your bookkeeper isn’t working on your accounts daily. For example, most bookkeepers (like me) deliver reports by the 15th of every month, which means they may be working on your accounts for a few days in a row, pulling everything together.
So, what does your bookkeeper do on a daily basis?
I can’t speak on bookkeepers working for agencies or firms; their day-to-day may look a bit different than mine, but I can share what my day-to-day looks like as a bookkeeper running their own business.
On any given day, I may be:
Most bookkeepers also have multiple clients—which is why outsourcing to a small business bookkeeper vs. hiring an in-house bookkeeper is even possible–as your bookkeeper can spend as much time as they need on you, but then also serve others instead of relying on only you and your business to support them.
What your bookkeeper does depends on what you’ve hired them to do! There are many things you can outsource to a bookkeeper, which means there are many things a bookkeeper may be doing for you.
For instance, if you’re hiring a bookkeeper to clean up your books, what they do will look a lot different than if you hired them as a retainer to manage your bookkeeping monthly. And vice versa.
It can also depend on if your bookkeeper offers any other services. For example, while I offer bookkeeping services, I also offer Tax Services such as business and personal tax preparation, planning, and tax return amendments. Any clients who work with me and choose bookkeeping and tax service would have a different day-to-day than someone who only chose bookkeeping.
